You say you’re ok, that everything is fine.
Even if I didn’t know you,
I’d be able to tell from the look in your eyes.
Ashamed to look and meet my gaze.
Afraid of what I’ll see,
Afraid of what your eyes will say
When you’re in secret calling out to me.
You don’t have to smile
And pretend everything’s all right.
You don’t have to smile;
I don’t want you to lie.
Ever since I met you,
I knew there was pain.
So you don’t have to smile
Till you feel right again.
The searching look upon your face
Gives it all away,
Tearing down my barriers
And crumbling them to grey.
I don’t want you to see how I really feel.
All that’s in my eyes is suffering
And these tears threatening to spill.
You don’t have to smile
And pretend everything’s all right.
You don’t have to smile;
I don’t want you to lie.
Ever since I met you,
I knew there was pain.
So you don’t have to smile
Till you feel right again.
Someday in your eyes I will finally see
What’s been going on for years
And how you feel for me.
Until then I pray and hope
That you will someday be
A girl whose smile is now real,
Free from lies or suffering.
You don’t have to smile
And pretend everything’s all right.
You don’t have to smile;
I don’t want you to lie.
Ever since I met you,
I knew there was pain.
So you don’t have to smile
Till you feel right again.
